It may feel like it snuck up on you, but Valentine’s Day is only a week away! In order to help you out, we’ve comprised the best His and Hers Valentine Guide for Shopping Local you’re going to find!
Him 10 – Nothing says love like a pair of new Muck boots. Laugh if you want, but I don’t know a farmer around that isn’t happy to see a new pair of Mucks on the doormat. Hildebrand Feed in Oakland sells them. 9 – Got a golfer in your life? Who isn’t thinking about spring and summer at this point? Go ahead, get that membership bought for him now. Riverside Golf Course, Treynor Recreational Area, and Quail Run Golf Course in Neola are ready to hook you up. 8 – Don’t know about you, but I don’t know a man alive who doesn’t love a little, or more likely a lot of, beef jerky! Hook up with some from Jack Links in Underwood, or the Minden Meat Market, or Gress Locker in Hancock where the pieces are huge! 7 – Is he a goer? How ‘bout a day trip to Mt. Crescent? Tube, snowboard, or even ski – send him and the guys or make it a “his and hers” Valentine gift and you go with him! Gotta love when you win, too! 6 – And you can’t go wrong with a friendly wager and a game at the Minden Bowl! Love starts with bowling shoes! 5 – Or you can go for a Valentine’s Day weekend outing to the Coral Lodge Spaghetti Dinner in Macedonia at the DeWitt Building from 5-7 on Feb. 9. Eat some good food, talk to the neighbors, and support a great organization! 4 – Another favorite of mine is to give your hubby the best date around – his daughter (if he has one, or a niece)! Buy tickets for the Daddy-Daughter Dance to be held at Impact Hill in Oakland on Feb. 15. It was a huge hit last year, although it may cost you a little more than expected. I hear daddy’s princess likes only the best! (But you might get a free night at home to lounge and eat bon bons out of the deal while the hubby’s with the kids!) 3 – Maybe you just want a fun night out with your man. If that’s the case, head to Tailgators in Oakland for the brisket sandwich special, some drinks to get your groove on, and love songs on the jukebox Saturday, the 16th! 2 – Then again, maybe you know he loves his car as much as he loves you! In that case, head on over to NAPA in Oakland and get your guy all set up with a car care kit or a fuzzy steering wheel cover – even if he won’t admit it’s cold outside! 1 – But I’m not gonna lie when it comes to a guy, I always think beer and pizza is a win-win. What guy doesn’t love beer and pizza? And nobody has both like Casey’s. The new sausage and meatball screams manly! Find a Casey’s in Oakland, Minden, Crescent, and Treynor. Of course, Buck Snort makes a mean pizza, too, in Oakland or Neola, and Henry’s Diner in Crescent is even making special heart-shaped pizzas for your loved one! Her 10 – Hello, chocolate! I’m just going to say that chocolate is always a good way to go, but I’m also going to say it wouldn’t hurt to add a bottle of wine from Prairie Crossing Winery (Treynor) or Breezy Hills Winery (Minden) to go with it! Of course, coffee and chocolate works well together, too so grab some coffee from Java Supply in Treynor if that’s more her speed. 9 – You cannot go wrong by pampering her! She’s probably going to be impressed if you bring home a gift card or book a date for a well-deserved massage. You can get one at Ahh-spirations in Oakland, in Shelby at Bell Massage, or in Crescent at the Compassionate Wellness Center. 8 – What does every mom on the planet want? She wants a night out! Find a local girl who needs some extra cash in her pocket, book her to babysit, and head to The Pink Poodle in Crescent for Prime Rib! You win, too, with that one! 7 – Possibly the only thing she loves as much as you (and maybe the kids if she has them!) is Iowa! Doll her up in some “Proud to be from Iowa” gear. Blossom’s in Oakland and B Restored in Walnut will have her dressed in style! 6 – But maybe she likes something completely unique, a one-of-a-kind like her, in which case, you need to head to Penny’s Treasures in Neola for a painting to hang in the living room or The Painted Camel in Macedonia! They actually have hand-made heart vases and happy little rings, plus a ton more options from 30 different artists! 5 – Wanna feel really good about yourself by supporting a good cause and make her happy? Why not order chocolate-covered strawberries from Lookout Village in Neola? Lookout Village is a group of volunteers that help the elderly stay in their homes as long as possible and they happen to know how to dip a strawberry, too! Today is the last day to score these! 4 – Is she a sucker for a pet? Make her day with a Wag-A-Gram! The Midlands Humane Society will deliver a Valentine just for your lady via a live dog! It’ll cost ya, though! 3 – Best news I’ve heard all week is that the Dairy Queen in Oakland is back open for business come Sunday, the 10th! And nothing screams Happy Heart Day like a homemade Valentine and a strawberry and Ghirardelli chocolate chunk Blizzard! Yes, please! 2 – When in doubt, get help! Check with her favorite MaryKay, Rodan & Fields, Essential Oils, or whatever it is she loves hook-up! They will know what she’s craving! And if she doesn’t have one, check in with Julie Kudron, she’ll get you set up with a peppermint oil even you will love! 1 - Of course, sometimes, the best idea is the simple one: grab tickets for a movie at The Dreamland Theatre in Carson or The Phoenix in Neola because no woman says “no” to a good snuggle! Hope these suggestions put a little extra love in your life this Valentine’s Day because happy hearts in happy towns live life longer! Happy Heart Day!
